20th Oct 2008A few unusual local sights
Some random picture from the last month or so, all taken locally.
A pair of 59's in near darkness and a 40 in the sun being the highlights.
5th Oct 2008Rainy Sussex
A few pictures from a family weekend away in Sussex.
Thanks to Chris Nevard for giving me the idea of Pevensey and Westham, with his fine shots (also in the rain actually!).
Also a few from a sunny Petersfield.
Nice to go somewhere new for a change!
14th Sep 2008Cornwall holiday
A few bits and bobs I managed to include in a family holiday to Cornwall.
Just a trip to St.Ives and the Night Riviera at Truro, but some nice results.
21st Aug 2008West Somerset Railway (ages ago...)
Some pictures I'd forgotten about, taken at the West Somerset Railway a couple of months ago.
Plenty of heritage traction around, and some decent weather too.
2nd Jul 2008Assorted late uploads
A few bits and pieces from the last couple of months.
Really haven't been out photographing trains since the Wiltshire trip.
This collection includes the "Duke of Gloucester", the Cardiff Bay bubble, and other locals bits.
I must get out next time it's nice!
11th May 2008Wiltshire day trip
I hadn't had a day out for a while and a sunny day beckoned.
I decided on a visit to the quiet but picturesque Berks and Hants line in Wiltshire.
Some excellent locations and quite a few 59's seen in the afternoon.
18th Apr 2008Cardiff for the cup!
A few shots taken a couple of weeks ago at Chepstow of one of the footexs to Paddington taking Cardiff fans to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final against Barnsley.
Dull wet weather, but the results were ok, as was the result of the match!
Also a couple of sunny pictures from Severn Tunnel Jct that week.
11th Apr 2008Rather overdue random update
My lack of railway photography in the last few months is really letting the site down, but I'll still snap a few trains if I'm out somewhere, or if something interesting appears near me.
Here we have a Deltic at Lydney, and the Stobart Pullman at Magor amongst others...
Sorry, I really must try harder.
18th Feb 2008A quick visit to Gloucester.
A very quick nose about at Gloucester whilst shopping.
Nice to see a repainted 57 and 47.
Where the rotting 37's have appeared from I don't know, but Gloucester is still the place to see heritage traction.
Also a couple from this week at Severn Tunnel Jct.
13th Jan 2008Strange sights at Newport (& others)
A chance drive past Newport station and a quick stop gave me the chance to get a photo of the (maybe short lived) 220017 in it's Arriva X-Country livery.
While I was there for 5 minutes, Silverlink's 150127 appeared!
Also included here are a few of the better ones from a mainly train-free month.
17th Dec 2007Cardiff units in the rain.
I know you all get fed up of the classic traction and beautiful landscapes others display, so I thought I'd upload some recent shots of units in the rain at Cardiff!
See the 142's and 150's in all their glory as they operate services to exotic destinations like Aberdare, or the beautiful Merthyr Tydfil.
It wasn't half dark for 12pm I can tell you!
7th Dec 2007Rugby and Nuneaton revisited
My first trip out photting for months and months.
Decided to play it safe and visit a few of my old haunts on the WCML.
Rugby, which is fairly good but bad for photos, and Nuneaton which around tea-time is very busy, and slightly better for photos.
The main target was the water cannons, and they didn't disappoint.
Also stopped off at Cathiron for 30 minutes and saw 5 locos.
30th Nov 2007Best of a bad November
A few random shots from the last month.
None of which I think are that special, but I don't want to let the site get cobwebs.
Highlights were 6201 Princess Elizabeth at Severn Tunnel Jct, and yet another 59 on the Machen stone.
I actually visited Rugby and Nuneaton last week, but that's a bigger upload I'll do next week.
24th Oct 2007A 31 to Parkend, and a 59 at Magor.
Not much to report lately, but these were of interest to me.
Sunday before last 31466 ran on the Dean Forest Railway for the day, and I caught up with it at Parkend.
Also included is a wet morning at Magor last tuesday, which gave me 59102 on the Machen-Westbury stone.
22nd Sep 2007August and September bits.
I still haven't got out anywhere on a train photting trip lately.
I've been too busy shooting other things to be honest.
If you're interested, they're here...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10024613@N06/

Meanwhile, here's the best bits from the last month or so.
At least it's got 37's in!
23rd Aug 2007Tangmere fails on the Torbay Express.
On the 19th August the Bristol-Kingswear Torbay Express was hauled by 34067 "Tangmere".
However, this failed with a burst air pipe on the outward journey, and on return I captured it at Weston-s-Mare with 67003 at the front.
9th Aug 2007Torbay Express
A few shots of the Torbay Express with "King" 6024 at Weston-S-Mare last sunday, including a multi exposure HDR image just for the fun of it.
Also 60500 on the Corby-Margam steel near Chepstow,
28th Jul 2007Isle of Wight, Eastleigh and Southampton
A while since the last upload, but other than these I haven't taken anything railway related.
This was a family break on the Isle of Wight, with a call in at Southampton and Eastleigh.
Shocking to see all those perfectly good 442's lying around.
11th Jul 2007Under the Severn Bridge.
A sunday with nothing to do prompted me to take a walk onto the Severn Bridge to snap a few trains running underneath. Luckily the Voyager diversions were still happening, so it wasn't too quiet.
A couple of these shots were processed as HDR images merging multiple exposures.
23rd Jun 2007West Somerset Railway 1960's weekend.
The weekend before last I took a trip down to the West Somerset Railway to see some hydraulic action.
Two "Westerns" in action was a great sight, but sadly the weather was at times awful.
Sadly I managed to miss the Warship, but the Hymek was in fine form.
17th Jun 2007The Bristol "Coal-Stone Haul" tour.
Better late than never...I've had a lot to do lately.
This is the tour 2 weeks ago that covered the Bristol area coal and stone branches.
Actually I've only just got the pun in the name. Bristol Colston Hall...doh!
Also here is a Midland Mainline HST at Chepstow, very rare obviously, and a GNER between Bristol and Gloucester.
8th Jun 2007A week in Dawlish, part 2.
The rather overdue second batch of photos from my week in Devon.
The saturday was the start of Virgin's hired-in HST sets, but unfortunately the sun didn't shine for some of it.
Also a 67-hauled tour, and a late night trip to Totnes to see the sleeper.
2nd Jun 2007A week in Dawlish, part 1.
A week's holiday in Dawlish with the family, and plenty of opportunities for photos.
First off is few shots from along the sea wall on a sunny 20th May.
A few more to be added to these soon...
19th May 2007Black and white effects.
I haven't been out to take anything lately, and the site hasn't had any new pics for a while, so I thought I'd upload these converted "old style" photos.
Simply converted to b&w, adjusted contrast, a touch of sepia, and even a little bit of darkening in the corners!
Some are quite authentic I think.
You be the judge...
6th May 2007A couple of new local spots (and others)
After visiting Severn Tunnel Junction most weeks for many years, I finally took a walk down the wasteland of the old down yard to the motorway embankment. Not a bad spot for westbound stuff. Also I found the Severn Tunnel cutting in Caldicot, which offers me a new view.
Also included are a couple of other noteworty pics from the week.
28th Apr 2007Other photography around the railways.
A new idea for me.
I thought I'd start a gallery of photographs taken while out on my travels involving railways, but not directly of trains themselves.
I probably don't take enough shots like these, as most of them I'm quite pleased with.
Hope you enjoy them. I'll be adding more I'm sure...
21st Apr 2007Wylye Valley Diversions...part2.
More photos from my day out in Wiltshire to see the diverted freight services down the Wylye Valley.
After an hour or so at Sherrington I headed off on my own to Berkeley near Westbury to see the afternoon stone trains to and from the Mendip quarries.
By then the sun had done a bit of a disappearing act though.
15th Apr 2007Wylye Valley diversions
A collection of photos taken on the 12th April between Westbury and Salisbury while the freight diversions from the Basingstoke line take place.
An excellent day out in the good company of Tony Callaghan, Chris Nevard, Pete Ball and John Chalcroft.
There's more from this day, and I'll upload them soon...
9th Apr 2007Football specials at Magor with 67's.
A long overdue update, and some bright sunny conditions for last week's footexs.
The JPT final between Doncaster and Bristol Rovers produced no less than 4 class 67's in 3 different liveries, including both royal locos.
An added bonus was the LA79 Midland Mainline set of coaches on a westbound HST.
22nd Mar 2007Rugby specials locos, and Serco 37's
A visit to Ponthir near Cwmbran for the 3x47's moving from Crewe to Canton for sat 17th's rugby extras.
Also a few others, and a pair of DRS 37's near Chepstow with the Serco test train.
14th Mar 2007The Severn Estuary - Gatcombe
An hour or so at Gatcombe, a few miles north of Lydney on 7th March to see the lunchtime goings-on.
Luckily for me, a double headed freight, and another steel the other direction too.
I've enhanced the sky in these pictures to show how it really looked. I'm quite pleased with the effect, particularly into the sun with the double-header.
Also included is 66413 hauling 37510 at Magor.
8th Mar 2007Sunny hour at Magor
I haven't been out taking any photos for ages, as I've been off work injured and resting.
However a beautiful sunny morning tempted me to take the short drive to Magor to see an hour or so's action.
Fabulous weather gave me some pleasing results.
16th Feb 2007Snowy Warwickshire.
A bit of a late upload, but I've been trying to get them right.
A day out to Nuneaton area on thursday 8th to get a few good shots in the decent snowfall.
A lot of Pendos and Freds as expected, but some of the scenery by the frozen canal looked wonderful.
Blizzards all day, so not the clearest shots, and might not appeal to everyone!

ps...I've lost my Freightmaster book, so I can't tell anyone the workings yet!
10th Feb 2007A few night bits from Newport.
A couple of hours down at Newport last tuesday evening to see how the new lens coped at night.
Seems pretty good. They do come out different to the old lens, so the adjustments took some fiddling with to get right.
Still not sure about the levels on some of these, but I can't fault the clarity.
It appears to find more detail in the background than the old kit lens did in the foreground!
7th Feb 2007Gloucester heritage-fest!
Had another trip up to Gloucester, as it's been a while.
Costwold Rail had bought some new locos, and it's a real step back in time at Gloucester at the moment.
A 31, 33, 45, 47... fantastic stuff, all seen in fantastic weather.
I'd recommend a visit.
3rd Feb 2007Sunny days are here again!
Finally the cloud lifts...!
Sadly due to work I couldn't get very far, but everything looks good in the winter sun.
A few HSTs and 66's at Severn Tunnel Jct and Magor, but they all looked good. Particularly the HST at Magor on the bend.
Here's to a few more days of this.
29th Jan 2007A few hours in Berkshire.
A trip out on the 24th to see the snow which had long since melted!
Sadly it also turned out to be the only day of the week which wasn't sunny! Such is the joy of this hobby...
Took the train from Thatcham to Reading, and a quick trip for some daft reason to Ascot too. At least these were all new locations to me!
Apologies for all the units, but I didn't see one loco all day.
Now I know where NOT to go in future...!
22nd Jan 2007A few new locations in the Valleys.
Continuing my attempt to do all the stations in the Valleys!
On thursday 18th when we had the big storms I couldn't work, so I took the opportunity to seek out a new lens.
Found a very nice Canon 28-105 USM second hand in Merthyr, so I had a nose around the Valleys trying it out.
Unfortunately the weather was so awful I couldn't really tell how good it was, but some sunny days since have shown it to be an excellent piece of kit.
17th Jan 2007Bits from January
The best of a bad month.
A new spot high above the river Wye at Chepstow, and a few others which came out ok in the awful weather.
8th Jan 2007An hour at Bishton flyover.
A quick visit to the bridge near Bishton flyover for a few morning freights.
Tragic weather, but it brightened up a bit for two shots.
I really haven't taken any other pictures lately, but thought I'd better put some sort of update on...
2nd Jan 2007A day in Surrey.
A long drive down to Hook near Basingstoke (cheaper parking!), and a train to Woking.
Big problems though, as engineering work had over-ran from christmas, and at least 50-60% of trains were cancelled. The rest were taking hours to get anywhere.
Too chaotic, so I went off to Guildford as it was getting towards dusk.
Most of the day the weather was lousy anyway, but some nice dusk and dark shots.
20th Dec 2006The final Rhymney Valley loco.
A very breif visit to Cardiff on monday 12th, for the last ever locomotive-hauled service from Rhymney-Cardiff the 2F10 07.44 departure.. The most miserable wet day you could imagine, but maybe fitting weather for a sad day...
Got soaked but enjoyed a huge clag from 37410, as the driver gave it one last blast.
15th Dec 2006A few from Tamworth and Nuneaton.
A day out to Tamworth to take my daughter to the Snow Dome.
I made sure I got an hour at Tamworth, and afterwards stopped at off at Nuneaton for a few night movements.
Always try to fit trains into a day out somehow...!
10th Dec 2006Farewell to the Wessex 442's.
Seeing as the Wessex "pigs" the 442's are finishing in the new year, I thought I'd upload a gallery of some of my better shots of these units.
A shame to see another old type with a bit of character disappear.
Most of these photos have been re-processed to look better than when I first did them. My skills have improved!
I hope to go down to Hampshire for one last time before xmas, but time is running out...
28th Nov 2006Newport rugby shuttles at night.
A couple of hours at Newport (once again!) to see the 37's and 50's doing the rugby shuttles for the Wales-All Blacks match. Unfortunately a unit occupied platform 1, so they came in on the platform I was on.
Still, they came out nice...
16th Nov 2006A few from Cardiff and Newport.
An attempt to get a good night shot of the Rhymney 37 at Cardiff, but completely bowled by an HST, so end up taking it from the platform it's on. Shame.
Also a 66 under the lights of Newport in some seriously bad weather. I can't describe how wet I got for this shot, but one of my best results ever I think!
8th Nov 2006Rugby Specials - The race is on!
On my way to Cardiff last saturday I stopped off briefly at Marshfield (or Coedkernew if you like), to see what was heading to Cardiff for the rugby match...
I had no timings or gen of any sort, but managed to see a pair of 37's, pair of 50's and a 67.
All within 20 minutes!
Fabulous stuff as the 50 and the 67 raced down the straight.
30th Oct 2006Western at Weston!
Had an evening out in Weston-S-Mare to catch D1015 on the return leg of a Gloucester-Penzance tour which it powered from Taunton-Glos.
A fantastic sight under the lights and only spoilt slightly when my camcorder failed to work!
19th Oct 2006"Lizzy" at Magor and a few from Sussex.
On the 6th Oct 6201 moved from Kidderminster to Bristol for a tour. It came down the Lydney and Chepstow line and reversed at Newport. I caught it at Magor in both directions.
I've also included a few from the previous week when I visited family in Sussex.
12th Oct 2006Afternoon at Stafford.
A day out to Stafford, involving a drive to Barnt Green, train to Birmingham, and on to Stafford, after a brief stop at Wolverhampton.
Took a large amount of shots, but as usual I only included the best ones.
Funnily enough I didn't see a Freightliner 66 all afternoon.....that's got to be very rare at Stafford! Still, no great loss!
4th Oct 2006A Newport evening.
A rather late upload (as usual!) On the 19th Sep I spent 2 hours at Newport trying out my camera in a well lit night situation.
Some rather nice results, even if there was only 2 freights the whole time I was there....!
26th Sep 2006The Saltash Bridge.
A day out to Plymouth and I thought I'd take a quick trip to see the bridge which crosses the River Tamar and leads into Cornwall. Only saw an Hst and a Voyager, but then what else is there I suppose....?!
23rd Sep 2006DRS hauled NMT, and Wiltshire stone.
More bits and bobs. Fri 8th Sep produced a pair of 37's on the New Measurement train, in place of the usual HST. Also a trip down to Wiltshire to see a few stone trains and hopefully 59002, which has since been repainted! Never did see it.....
Also a Loadhaul 60 on the Murco tanks at Newport.
11th Sep 2006Torbay Express by night.
Two trips down to Weston to see the return Kingswear-Bristol steam tour that's been running every weekend. "King" 6024 was a fantastic sight for (believe it or not), my first ever steam shoot! Unfortunately the first time it went early, hence the second trip! Still, I got some interesting night shots on the pier.....
9th Sep 2006Barry Island diesels, and various bits.
Been a while since the last upload. Must be more organised!
Some shots from the running day at Barry on the 28th August (late I know!). A couple of hired-in Hsts at Bristol, and a 37 makes an appearance at Newport one wet morning....
27th Aug 2006A day in Dawlish.
A weekend away in Torquay gave me the chance to have a stroll along the sea wall at Dawlish. I chose the saturday as I wanted to see the Hst sets. Some very nice weather too.
18th Aug 2006Two wet mornings at Newport.
Too wet to work for the last couple of days, so spent the mornings at Newport. Same old stuff, but I took the big lens and had a play with some telephoto shots. They got a bit samey after a while, but it shows you don't need good weather for a good pic. I'm off on hols for the weekend now, so no time to add the captions yet.
12th Aug 2006A comparison of Nikon D100 and Canon 30D
As I'm not sure whether I like my new camera more than my old one, I thought I'd find a shot exactly like the one I took yesterday to see the differences. To me the exposure looks better on the Nikon and the overall quality better on the Canon. I'd be interested to know which one other people prefer. Go on, reassure me!
10th Aug 2006A few from the last week or so
A few interesting bits and bobs from the last couple of weeks. Including "Five door fred" 66951 at Magor and 37417 on the Bristol East steel trip. Also my first pics with my new 70-200L lens. Magic!
5th Aug 2006Hertfordshire trip - The Great Northern
Part Two of my Hertfordshire weekend. This time a train from Knebworth down to Potters Bar to change for Hadley Wood. After a while there I headed back to the picturesque setting of Welwyn North. Some decent weather too....
28th Jul 2006Hertfordshire trip - Harpenden & Cheddington.
Part one of a two part upload (at least!). A family party near Stevenage gave me the chance to photograph a few different areas, none of which are new to me but I love them all the same. Don't expect much in the way of locos though.....!
25th Jul 2006Severn Estuary in the sun.
A couple of pictures I'd forgotten about, taken last week. Popped up the road to Purton near Lydney for just 45 minutes as there's 3 freights due mid-afternoon. Only in one spot I'm afraid, as it was too hot to make the effort to move!
17th Jul 2006Cross Country HSTs at Bristol.
Last saturday was my first chance to sample the hired-in hsts Virgin have been running on summer saturdays. One GNER set and 3 Midland Mainline sets( of which I saw 2) run at the moment. I spent 4 tedious hours at Temple Meads in pursuit of them. Nothing but Voyagers and 158s...yawn... Luckily I needed all but one of the power cars I saw that day!
7th Jul 2006Midlands day out, and 87012 at last!
Had a day in the Midlands on monday, to see NSE liveried 87012 on it's final run. Amazingly the onlt time I ever saw it. Talk about leaving it late! Had a good time at Tamworth and Nuneaton too, and found a new spot, Grendon.
2nd Jul 2006A wet day and a sunny day at Newport.
The 26th of June was too wet to work, so I spent the morning in the rain at Newport. Same old stuff, but some good results anyhow. Four days later I popped down for the early evening sun which produced some lovely colours. Lucky too, as I saw a Loadhaul 60, Freightliner 66 and a 47. Not to mention the Transpennine 158. Must go further afield again soon!
22nd Jun 2006More 80's photos
Another bunch of late 80's/early 90's pictures I've scanned in.I'm afraid I haven't got much information on any of them. Apologies for the truly awful camera quality, but in your early teens in those days you couldn't afford much! I've done what I can to touch them up, but as I've said before....it's all about the memories!
Hope they stir some memories for others, leave a comment if they do! Cheers.
15th Jun 2006Last weeks bits and bobs.
A few interesting pics from the last week in the good weather, including 37411 near Chepstow with a Bescot-Newport Adj light engine move, and a few from Westbury.
6th Jun 2006Newport Godfrey Rd - The End.
Last week Newport's Godfey Road stabling point closed for the last time. It dates back well into steam days, when it was also used for coaching stock for Eastern Valleys services. A great shame to lose it, as it gave the spotter or photographer more to see at Newport, with light engine movements at regular intervals. Over the years I got a few photos that provide good memories, and rather many recent ones! Here's a view last weekend of the track lifting, and a few good memories.
29th May 2006Rugby and Nuneaton day.
A trip up to Warwickshire to see a few things, like the Drs 37's and the Fastline 56. Not particularly impressed with the results of my new camera. Too much glare, so I turn the contrast and exposure down, and things are still strange and contrasty. They may look fine to some, but compare with the older pics on this site. I need help here....
16th May 2006FA Cup specials (new camera)
On friday I changed my trusty Nikon D100 for a new Canon 30D after seeing a lot of evidence that I'd prefer the results. They didn't disappoint, and saturday afternoon I went down to Marshfield to see the Cup Final specials.
14th May 2006Large logo Steel, and a colourful afternoon
On May 4th the 6C01/6C02 Newport ADJ-Bristol East steel was hauled by 37425. I managed to see it on the return journey on the curves at Magor. The following day a chance stop-off at Severn Tunnel Jct produced a colourful array of locos and units...all within an hour!
13th May 2006South Coast electrics.
We had a family holiday in Weymouth and I did my best to include trains, so I suggested a trip on the train from Bournmouth to Lymington. Brockenhurst to Lymington is run with Mk1 slam door units, and luckily for me it was the blue one on this day. A lovely sight and a fun journey. I also couldn't resist adding a panorama I constructed of Weymouth harbour, worth seeing full-size!
3rd May 2006Chepstow work, and bits and bobs
A really quiet month for me train-wise, so not much to upload. Just a couple of pics of the 50's on the Easter specials at Ponthir, and two shots from Pilning and Bishton. Also, a night time view of the old yard being lifted at Chepstow. I've found an earlier picture as a comparison.
14th Apr 2006New Metronet 66's and some Anglia 47's.
Last tuesday saw the movement of the latest batch of new 66's from Newport Docks to Willesden. A long wait ensued as they struggled to find a driver, but my time was well filled meeting Mark Sutton and Alex Cook. Cheers for a good day guys- told you I'm slow to get my pics done! Also here are a few more shots of Costwold's 47's at Gloucester.
10th Apr 2006Berkshire and Wilts.
Another trip across to The Berks and Hants for a couple of new locations and a call-in at Westbury on the way back. Due to engineering work it seemed like a lot of the stone wasn't running, which was a shame on this lovely day. One day I'll finally see the "Green machine" 59002!
6th Apr 2006The Blue Pullman and 2x37's.
The Blue Pullman visted South Wales on 30thMarch, and I saw it at a very gloomy Severn Tunnel Jct. Also, since the Newport area has been playing host to a pair of EWS 37's lately, I've been doing my best to capture them in action. Only seen them a few times, as although the "gen" is correct they don't always run to time!
28th Mar 2006Local night bits.
Had an evening at Newport last week, but got told off by staff for using the focus assist light. Told them it wasn't a flash and turned it off, but was later asked to leave the station. At least I got some reasonable shots first....
14th Mar 2006Local snow.
A nice bit of snow fell overnight on saturday. I went out on sunday to take a few pics. Could have got out a bit earlier, but not much about on sundays anyway. Nice to see a Loadhaul 60 though.
9th Mar 2006Stafford afternoon.
A trip up to Stafford, as the north midlands was due for heavy snow fall on thursday. Of course it didn't happen...! A lovely day though, even if most of the freight was facing the wrong way for the sun! Left the car at Barnt Green to get the train, where I got a nice shot of a Voyager.
5th Mar 2006Old Oak-Canton loco move.
Last friday saw 50031 and 37411 move from Old Oak Common to Canton as the 6Z37, conveying a couple of old brake vans too. Unfortunately as usual a unit appeared at the wrong moment and spoiled a good shot. However after taking another photo of the scene I managed to cut and paste a new piece of background on, and the shot is saved! Very pleased with the result.
27th Feb 2006Whistler to Cardiff, and 57 on scrapper.
Popped down to Marshfield(or Coedkernew if you like) on saturday to see the 1Z47 Crewe-Cardiff railtour with 40145 on the front. Sun was very nice, but just as it was getting close a unit approached the other way, so it we couldn't get a very wide sideways-on shot. Ho hum.... Also added some shots of 57604 hauling the Shoeburyness-Newport Docks scrap move through Severn Tunnel Jct on 28thFeb.
25th Feb 2006Gatwick Express at Magor and others...
Nice weather on monday to see 66714 hauling an ex-Gatwick Express set complete with a 73 on the rear. This was a 6Z77 Stewarts Lane-Barry stock move for the V.O.G Railway. Also included are some pics from Newport on thursday, when I took the 300mm lens with me to get some different angles. Not good conditions, but I quite like the results.
13th Feb 2006Wiltshire stone.
A nice afternoon spent at Little Bedwyn near Hungerford, and then on to Westbury. Had the usual trouble at Westbury with the sun being nearly always the on wrong side. Beautiful spot by the canal at Bedwyn though. Shame not all the stone goes that way....Yet again I failed to see the elusive green 59002!
4th Feb 2006London trip - Southern.
The second day of my London visit, and a trip to London Bridge and Clapham Jct. Unfortunately half of London Bridge is closed on sundays, but Clapham is still busy enough. Saw hundreds of units, so I've included one of each for variety.
1st Feb 2006London trip - Great western.
A weekend visting my brother in Acton again, and a trip into Paddington from Acton Main Line. Haven't been there for 15 years, and nothing worth seeing now, but a different location at least. Some nice low sun at Acton though. The following day I went off to see some southern stuff, upload soon....
21st Jan 2006A few from Gloucester.
Haven't updated for ages as I haven't been anywhere to take anything interesting. These few shots from Gloucester last weekend will have to do. It was just a shopping trip, but the sun was out and Gloucester has some decent locos hanging around at the moment.
31st Dec 2005Wintery Newport.
After the east and north had snow this week I waited for our turn. When it happened it was an inch at best, and lasted all of three hours or so before melting. Still, a good chance to try out my new lens, a Sigma 28-105. Rather disturbed at the results....had to underexpose by 3-4 notches, as on normal it was SO bright. It also seemed to create bright skies, and loud garish contrasts in a "Canon" sort of way. Lots of lens flair too, but is this the lens or the effect of the snow? Help appreciated!
17th Dec 2005Gloucester line 37's
The week of 5-9th Dec was an interesting one for me. Arriva decided to use top and tailed 37's on Cardiff-Gloucester services twice a day. This meant thundering 37's literally past my house! I saw them most days, but hardly any sun all week sadly. Took a trip to Glos on friday and had the bonus of a pair of 20's and a 47 too!
10th Dec 2005Valley Diesel Gala
A week late I know, but I shoot almost all pics in RAW mode now, and it's given me a lot more to do. This is a collection of my best photos from the 4th Dec's Valley lines Gala to commemorate the end of loco haulage up the Valleys.
29th Nov 2005South Wales snow
Woke up last friday to a snowy scene, and as I didn't have any work to do, I took a trip down to Glamorgan to see some deeper snow and get some pictures. Mainly Hst's, but stopped of at Magor on the way to see the 'liner which was unfortunately not a 57 today.
23rd Nov 2005Rugby and the Oxford canal.
A trip out last thursday to Rugby and the Oxford canal at Ansty just up the road. A totally last minute decision, based on me waking up on a sunny day and not feeling like work...
20th Nov 2005A couple of local bits
I've found myself a new spot near Chepstow(only 5 mins from my house), after seeing it on Jamie Squibbs' pictures. Spent an hour there for two evenings last week and got some nice shots as the sun went down. Thanks to Jamie for the idea. I don't think there's anywhere local left to try now!
4th Nov 2005Evening 37's
A couple of hours at Cardiff Central to see the 3 loco-hauled Rhymney trains. The first one wasn't very dark, but the others were very satisfying. Had a quick stop-off at Newport on the way home and saw a couple of 60's. Nice to have them back, but they'll soon get tedious again!
28th Oct 2005Evening at Newport.
I decided it was about time I took some more night shots, and this time using RAW mode for better colour reproduction. Newport seemed like a good bet, with a mixture of orange and white lighting and a good selection of subjects. The results didn't disappoint and are among my favourites I've ever taken. I'll make this a regular thing!
20th Oct 2005Severn Valley Gala
Last weekend's Severn Valley Railway diesel gala produced quite a few different machines, but generally not such an interesting line-up as last year. No "Whistlers" and I managed to miss the 50. Highlight for me was the 33, which I took too many pictures of. I've just included the best of a dullish day.
11th Oct 2005West and North London.
Now that my brother's moved to Acton it's a good chance for me to check out some London action when I visit. Sadly the weather didn't turn out too special, but a new experience for me to see the Heathrow Express units. Also a brief visit to the Midland Mainline.
27th Sep 2005Crewe Works 2005
Finally! My collection from Crewe works open day on 10th September. Not all the pictures I took, just the ones that appealed to me. Not sure how much interest these will generate, as everyone's probably seen enough pics from this event already!
5th Sep 2005Bristol Summer saturday.
Spent saturday the 27th at Temple meads to see a couple more hired-in Hst sets. By chance the pair of celeb 31's was working Weymouth services that day too, so not a bad afternoon. Could have used a bit more sun though!
31st Aug 2005Dawlish walk.
Had a weekend in the Torbay area, so spent Saturday afternoon strolling along the coast at Dawlish. The main objective was see a hired-in Hst set, but mis-timed it and only saw the one. A few nice shots though. Sorry for the lack of locos!
23rd Aug 2005Community Shield specials
Another late upload, and a small one too. Work's got the better of me lately unfortunately. This was a fortnight ago at Marshfield for the Kensington Olympia-Cardiff football specials. Some good traction and another great Chelsea result!
1st Aug 2005In and around Westbury
A recent(ish) trip down to Westbury to try to photograph a few stone trains. Found that there's nothing much about in the morning, but it goes mad in the afternoon for a couple of hours. Reasonably sucessful day, but often the sun wasn't where you wanted it. Sorry I can't tell you any of the workings!
24th Jul 2005Royal 67 scrapper and local bits
On the 20th July the Stewarts Lane-Caerwent scrap movement was handled by "royal" 67005 and I captured it at Magor heading up to Caerwent. Also a couple of pictures taken at Gatcombe on the Severn estuary and a rather nice shot of a 66 at Severn Tunnel Jct.
10th Jul 2005Salisbury Deltic and Cardiff 37's
On the 12th June Arriva ran a special top and tail service over the newly re-opened Vale of Glamorgan line serving Cardiff airport amongst other places. The other pictures are 55019 at Salibury with the return leg of the tour from Preston.
27th Jun 2005Chasing the Cobblers
A late upload as I've been on holiday. I found out early in the day that NSE 87012 was on the morning Northampton run, so a nice long drive to London to see the evening returns on their last day in service. Guess what? It gets replaced by a 90 at the last minute! I seem to be the only one with no pictures of this loco, and I had quite a few attempts. Horrible dark day anyway!
1st Jun 2005Wet and miserable
I'll probably get some stick for this, as this is exactly what film users hate about digital users. I'm also one of those picky people who only display bright shots. However... seeing as it's too wet to work today I thought I'd upload some interesting pictures from a day just like this one. Proof that a bit of variation is worthwhile. Enjoy, hopefully!
26th May 2005Afternoon in Warwickshire
A brief visit to a couple of places in Warwickshire. Alongside the canal at Ansty and a few miles south at Cathiron. Lucky enough to see a 37+20 light engine, but all passenger was Pendildo as expected.
15th May 2005West Somerset Diesel Gala
Some lovely sights to be seen at the WSR Diesel gala. Started off at Bishops Lydeard where the Hymek appeared with a class 14. We then drove on to Minehead, had lunch and still beat the Hymek! Minehead also is home to stored Hst's which makes an unusual sight. Highlight of the day was the Peak+50 working. Stunning!
10th May 2005A local mixed bag.
The best of the end of April. Includes a trip from Cardiff up to Llanishen behind 37425, a wonderful thrash! 66701 delivering more Emu's to Caerwent and a 59 at Severn Tunnel Jct! Not a bad week...
29th Apr 2005Triple Headed in the suburbs.
Following on from my Stratford trip, I caught the train out to Clapham Jct and back to Wandsworth Road. Not much to be seen, not even a Eurostar until a "Slim Jim" appears at 15.40 heading a pair of 73's! I hadn't seen a 33 in service since about 1990! Wouldn't mind some help identifying the service though....
27th Apr 2005More Scrappers...
Yet another 6Z80 Wimbledon to Caerwent scrap E.m.u working. Taken this time at Severn Tunnel Jct. There was about twenty people waiting on the bridge, so I thought I'd get a different shot down the line a bit.
24th Apr 2005The annual Stratford trip.
A bit late with these. Almost a year on from the last visit, another sunny day at Stratford. Only one 86 seen last time and none this time! Luckily saw one on a freight though. After this I went on to Clapham and Wandsworth, which I'll upload very soon.
9th Apr 2005Severnside Diversions.
During the past couple of weeks Patchway tunnel has been closed eastbound, so trains have been routed around Gloucester. I went north of Lydney to see some trains by the river. Typically managed to miss any freight!
7th Apr 2005An afternoon in the Valleys.
Being originally from Cardiff I decided to have a look around some of the stations not too far away that I used to visit as a child. Not too much changed apart from Radyr, and that was hugely different. Saw all three 37's running that day by chance.
22nd Mar 2005Mega Heritage Week!
What a week! Started with 50049 at Chepstow on a Chester-Minehead charter. Saturday meant more specials for the rugby including t&t 47's. If that wasn't enough I finally got to see my Western at Westbury! All topped off by Wales winning the Grand slam! Why can't every week be this good?!
12th Mar 2005Where's my Western..?
Went to the trouble of getting a train over to Bristol on a monday night,as D1015 was visiting on a tour. Waited hours, and found out that it went back to London via the Berks & Hants to make up lost time. Hmmph! Took a few shots of the usual suspects though.
8th Mar 2005League Cup Specials
Stood with about 10 other people in the freezing cold wind at Marshfield to see the footexs for the Carling cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea. Worth it to see the two royal 67's together... Great result for my Chelsea too!
26th Feb 2005Emu's to their doom (& others)
Took a long lunch break to see the 10.40 Shoeburyness-Newport Docks at Magor. It also ran the following week, and those pictures will be added to this gallery soon. Also included are a few others from Magor and Severn Tunnel Jct.
10th Feb 2005Hampshire day out
A few days of good weather prompted me to have a day off. Chose to head south this time, and tried Micheldever which was a nice change. Luckily managed to see a few remaining "slammers". Finished the day with a few night shots at Winchester.
25th Jan 2005Sad Scenes of Dereliction...
Visited Canton just after Christmas and I was shocked by how quickly the view had changed. No more 47's,56's or 60's, just a few shunters and a rotting 37509. Many happy memories of lines of 37's & others.Managed to construct a rather grainy panorama though. While I was at it, I remembered the pictures of Bristol Bath Rd I took in Sept'03. Another sad sight and now gone forever. Pass the tissues...!
23rd Jan 2005Best of the rest 2004
Just like last year, some more of my favourites which weren\'t previously included for one reason or another. Some of them better shots than the ones chosen instead of them for subject galleries! Oh well, enjoy! (Bear with me while I add the descriptions!)
24th Dec 2004When I were a lad...
Some old photos scanned from some very poor quality prints, but it's all about the memories isn't it?! If I could get the negatives scanned that would help, but for the time being, visit some history! Merry Christmas.
21st Nov 2004After Dark
I really love nightshots these days, so here's a collection taken a few nights ago at Newport, plus a few re-modified earlier pictures. Really starting to find my feet with photoshop now!
7th Nov 2004Clapham and Wandsworth
Three hours on the coach to London to visit Britains busiest station. Amazing to think I've been into this for twenty years and never been there before! Lots of units, but many different types.
19th Oct 2004Warwickshire again!
A last trip this year to see the loco hauled trains for probably my last time. Nice to see the Network Rail HST at last. I'm in the process of revamping this site now, new look soon!
26th Sep 2004Sea Wall Saturday
I finally got round to visiting the area again on the last summer Saturday. A shame to think that this is probably the last time anything really interesting is scheduled to run through here...Still,at least the sun came out!
15th Sep 2004Look East...
A long overdue update! A family wedding gave me a chance to have a look around Norwich, and of course did the usual stop in Hertfordshire on the way.
1st Jul 2004Anyone for Rugby? (and Nuneaton!)
A sunny day, and yet another day off work to visit my favourite stretch of line once again. Finally seeing a 66/4 being the highlight.
8th May 2004Sunny Stratford
A day at Stratford to try and see some 86's while I can. Only one success sadly, but some nice bright shots. A few pictures in Hertfordshire too.
8th Apr 2004Football Specials
A trip into Newport to see the footex charters for Bolton and Middlesborough's Carling Cup final in Cardiff.
9th Mar 2004More snow!
Just when you think it's all over, another snowfall! Trouble is, it's mostly DMU's nearby.
15th Feb 2004Heritage Traction
My limited selection of preserved loco pictures.
2nd Feb 2004Winter wonderland
A snowstorm at Rugeley, followed by a glorious day at Rugby and Nuneaton. Such a rare occurence these days!
26th Jan 200447's Through the years
A selection of Class 47 pictures over the last 20 years. Never did take enough photos of them!
20th Jan 2004Down South
A sunny December day at Winchester and Eastleigh. Finished off with a few nice night shots.
1st Jan 2004Best of the rest 2003
Some of my favourites which weren't previously included. Happy New Year!
13th Dec 2003Winter Sunset
A good sunset at Chepstow produced some surprising results!
5th Dec 2003Back to the 80's!
A selection from my earlier travels. Excuse the poor quality equipment!

Welcome
Welcome to The Halt.
A frequently changing view of modern railways.

I live near Newport, but I get away as often as possible to escape the endless 60's and 66's!

Most pictures up until May '06 were taken with a Nikon D100 digital SLR, but since then I've been using a Canon 30D, and a 70-200L lens which is just about the best purchase for the money you'll find.
I've also since changed the standard lens for a Canon 28-105mm USM, which is a vast improvement.
What is getting harder to find is decent traction, it's all gone plastic!

Feel free to leave any comments(good or bad!) It's nice to get feedback on my hobby. Hope you enjoy my work. Cheers!

90011 crackles it's way north at Rugeley. I've since made this picture look far better, but can't replace it on the site without losing it's hits!
